a winning combination It was a small piece in the local paper, the Victoria Standard, that caught my eye.
The notice said there would be a luncheon at the Baddeck Community Centre in support of L Cape Breton. This had to be : good food and a good cause. Also, as it was still winter, it was an excellent excuse for an and about day. Highland Cape Breton, Baddeck included, had been hit with an inordinate amount of snow, even by Highland standards. This would provide an excellent chance to bust out and see some other likewise trapped folks in Victoria County. We were delayed getting away and pulled up in front of the ray ban styles centre around 12:45. Arriving this late I expected the hall to be mostly empty and staff starting to clean up from all the earlier activity. Quite the contrary: the hall was still buzzing with life. L Cape Breton core members, the assistants and the general public were still there in great numbers. Under the watchful and skilled eye of Linda Macrae (Herring Choker Deli owner), the meals were being passed over the kitchen counter to hungry ray ban large metal guests. It was simple but tasty fare: soup, a sandwich and gingerbread with whipped cream. There were no complaints as everyone bent to the task. The event was a success from all perspectives. People got a chance to mingle, share snow stories and get a hearty meal in the dead of winter. When I asked Linda why she did this, she stated that it was a wonderful organization and she wanted more people on this side (Victoria County) ray ban online to be aware of L She pointed out that there was a L craft shop (Angel Loft) a bakery, and the Old Hen caf in the village of Orangedale, all using the various skills of the core members. My ears picked up at the word bakery. Combine deli and bakery and I could see a need for investigative journalism. Most importantly, the community of L Cape Breton benefited as well. I remembered my first exposure to L many years ago. Linda had organized a fundraising walk around Middle River and, as it turned out, they all went by our house. Being of a somewhat nosy persuasion, I joined them on the trek and met some of the core members, the assistants and volunteers. It was a wonderful experience and I saw firsthand what dedicated people all working in tandem could do. The experience humbled me as I noted how people came together for a common good. The love between them all was palatable. is an international ray ban sale federation of communities where men and women with developmental disabilities, and those who choose to share life with them, love and work together, says their web page. This is an organization that values varied abilities and everyone shares the goal to ensure that quality of life is available to all its people. Those who are part of L are not a one time for Whatever cause; they are in it for the long haul. The core members are lifelong members of L and many assistants spend years there. As we took our place at one of the long tables I looked around and recognized many of the core members and assistants from that walk years ago. It was obvious that these relationships have endured whatever the years have thrown at them and everyone is the better for it. We are all the better for it. L Cape Breton has a very informative web page and it is a wonderful read. In these times, when there is so much negativity wherever we turn, L is a breath of fresh air. L is found in many places around the world, all sharing the same goal of enriching the lives of those who need some help. As I ate my meal, I needed to know more. When I asked Mary MacDougall, homes co ordinator for L Cape Breton, what was the size of L in Cape Breton, the numbers were more than impressive; they were daunting. Firstly, she pointed out that L Cape Breton is the only rural L in Canada. There are six homes, six work programs, two storefronts, a craft studio, a caf and a bakery. There was that bakery word again. There is also a retreat home (Shalom), an organic garden, a Caper Club, and their own chapel and gathering place. When I pressed Mary for a guiding principle, she said, there is so much darkness, we strive to be a spark of light in this world. Cape Breton is home to 25 core members and 27 assistants who live in the houses. These assistants are from all over the world. In addition, there are 14 assistants who are involved in the day programs and six people who work in the main office. This is no small operation. The meal was quickly consumed, the dishes washed and the chairs put back in place.
The long term effect will come from those who were fortunate enough to be a small part of all this. It made one winter day a little brighter. I had satisfied my hunger for food and whetted my appetite to know more about L Cape Breton.
