A century of life In a cozy house on 700 block Nicola Street, Helen ray ban dealers Candido's living room is filled with pictures of the past. It's a long past. A century long. The photographs show five generations of her family, including her own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. And there are paintings of the Old Courthouse when the trees out front were small and thin, and pictures of houses that haven't existed on Lorne Street for decades. Candido, who turns 100 in three days, still remembers those historic buildings those that have been restored and those that are gone. Her landmark birthday will be celebrated Saturday with most of her family gathering at the Plaza for a tea party. She appreciates that her family asked her first if it would be OK to celebrate, but regrets she won't be able to attend a grandchild's wedding the same day because it's being held out of town. She has two children from her first marriage and can't remember how many grandchildren. She knows the one who is getting married on Feb. 26 is the last to get paired up. She's older than the 1945 home she lives in. A house that wasn't built when her parents, Fred and Adafrancis Suffa moved here from Everett, Wash. Her dad worked for Canadian Pacific. The house she grew up in still stands not far away on the 800 block of St. Paul Street. "There was nothing much past Fifth Avenue. There were only 3,000 people here then," said Candido. When her current home was built, Candido was 34. ray ban 3321 She said it's a nice house. Not too big, not too small. "I was here before polarized ray bans the Plaza (Hotel) was even thought about," she said, adding a Farmers Market used to sit where the heritage hotel now stands. "I watched them build it. Same with the Elks building." Her first husband, John Welsh, died in 1964. The couple was married in 1929 after Candido had left Kamloops looking for adventure. She said she ended up in New Westminster and waited tables at a couple of cafes. "I had to get out of Kamloops," she said. But she returned often because her parents remained here. She has two older siblings, Alice and Thelma, and two younger ones, Audrey and Fred. A few years after Welsh died, Candido was back in Kamloops. It wasn't long after that, 1971 to be exact, that she married August Candido. Her sister, Thelma, introduced them. Candido said it was more of a re introduction, as the two knew each other growing up. "He went to a Catholic school and I went to a public school," she said, adding she and August moved in some of the same circles. (Kamloops businessman Gary Candido is her nephew through marriage.) The first school Candido attended was Stuart Wood a school that marked its own 100th anniversary in 2007. It was a smaller building then. One year her class made plots for a Victory Garden and grew vegetables that were sold for money to support the troops fighting in the First World War. "That was a long time ago," she said, holding the certificate. She worked at a number of cafes during her time in Kamloops, including The Golden Gate, The Commodore and The Maple Leaf. All are gone. She can remember when the Rendezvous was The Dominion Hotel. It was a white building and had a porch across the front, she said. "That used to be Chinatown down there," Candido said of West Victoria Street. There was a time, too, when the law office of Cates where to buy ray bans Carroll Watt on Fourth Avenue was a fire hall. When the bell rang she would listen to the number of rings that would indicate the part of town in which the fire was raging. City Hall has always been in the same place, but for years the RCMP detachment and town jail shared the space, she said. In 2002, August died. The couple had been married 31 years. Candido hasn't let her age or her arthritis, which makes her legs ache, slow her down. She goes to the casino a couple of times a week so she can be around people and keeps herself busy reading the newspaper, doing crosswords and other puzzles. She has someone clean her house and tend to the yard. When asked what the key is to living a long life, Candido paused.
Part of it is good genes, she said. Her mom lived to be 92 and her dad 84. "Eat your vegetables," she said, adding she has never taken vitamins in her life.
