7m Frideswide Square 'could become traffic nightmare' if bus plan goes ahead From thisisoxfordshire A MAJOR Oxford junction that cost millions to redesign is in danger of being damaged and becoming a traffic nightmare, the leader of the city council has warned.

Bob Price said allowing buses to turn at Frideswide Square overhauled to the tune of 6.7m only recently would be a 'retrograde step'. It wants that to happen in time for the opening of the Westgate Shopping Centre in October but faces opposition from bus companies who say the solution is far from ideal. Speaking to the Oxford Mail this week, Mr Price also claimed it would defeat the purpose of Frideswide Square's overhaul which the city ray ban sunglasses deals council contributed 670,000 to. He said: "Using Frideswide Square in this way will be unwise in the extreme. "It could cause physical damage to the square you would have think seriously about the nature of the stonework. "Significant work could be needed to correct damage, or change alignments to protect pedestrians. "It's a very unwise proposal, a retrograde step, which would fly in the face of what we have been trying to achieve in the city centre Frideswide Square has improved the traffic management." Using the square as a turning circle would cause delays and impact traffic flows east, west and south, Mr Price added. He said: "Delays would be introduced to the bus services at peak times and there would be an impact on traffic flows in the square itself and in Botley Road, Worcester Street and Beaumont Street." The council chief called on the county council to re establish talks with Nuffield College, which vetoed earlier plans for a separate turning circle outside its buildings in Worcester Street. Oxford Bus Company managing director Phil Southall said earlier this year the company had carried out tests in Frideswide Square, where it is proposed ray ban orbs buses turn at the roundabout outside the station, and believed it would be 'unsafe', with more than 30 manoeuvres an hour needed. He said: "We are continuing to review options with the county council and constructive dialogue is taking place to try and find the best solution and to best make use of the space available. "Only when that work is concluded can we decide whether we are going to object to the closure of Queen Street or not." Karen Coventry, spokeswoman for Stagecoach Oxfordshire said: " We have ruled out turning buses in Frideswide Square as we do not believe it is safe to do so. "Our discussions are still ongoing with Oxfordshire County Council." Last year repair work was carried out to a stretch of pavement outside the Royal Oxford Hotel that was damaged after heavy vehicles drove over it. Same old story of non flexibility by the bus companies and their unwillingness to devise new routes or new statergies for their vehicles. It seemsthat if they cannot have their way the answer is simple, wreek havoc and force the councils hand. They seem to forget they are here to serve and not to dictate and resist change at any and every opportunity. Oh. Queen St, Queen St we MUST have Queen St, well you have had it for more than long enough. The report out just recently dealing with the debate around older diesel cars says Oxford is one of the most polluted city centres in the country, so buses OUT is a definate move in the right direction, lets keep it that way please. Just because Queen St is off limits doesn'tmean to say you cannot divert around the Oxpens and then turnleft up to Carfax and then turn right and continue east, or in fact stop on Oxpens and at the new Westgate and collect passengers instead of in your beloved Queen St. Its called change, the rest of the population have to live with it, so should you. All you have suggested is to move the problem, not solve it. Apart from the fact that your proposal would add more bus traffic into St Aldates, and increase the number of stops needed here and at the top of the High street. Also you argument around older desiel enginines is a red herring, all buses in that use Oxford are LEZ complient. Street Cat All you have suggested is to move the problem, not solve it. Maybe the buses are compliant and I would hope so as they do not run on normal pump diesel. The whole or better part of Oxford is polluted over and above the limit, but excluding the saturation of delivery vehicles etc at the same time as everything else dilutes the concentration over a 24hr period instead of 10/12 hours hopefully there by reducing the satyration levels. making all other day time vehicles electric and moving any diesel engined buses out of the city centre further reduces the saturation. There is afirther option of an electric walkway like you have at airports for the greater section of Queen St with intervals for pedestrians to be able to cross from one side to the other. With the merger of bus routes and making the bus companies work together much could be achieved. Itis after all, only as difficult as people rejecting change, want to make it.
