11 patients wait more than 12 hours for a bed at York Trust A E departments From York Press They were part of a total of 519 patients who waited more than than the national target time of four hours to be admitted, transferred or discharged at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust's accident and emergency departments at York Hospital and Scarborough Hospital.

That left only 81.1 per cent of patients being dealt with within the target time, compared to a national average in December of 86.2 per cent and the national target of 95 per cent. But the figure is better than Leeds' 78.1 per cent and Mid Yorkshire's 77 per cent. A York Trust spokeswoman said today that, as was the case up and down the country, its services were in high demand in December, with an increase in attendances to both of emergency departments and a need to admit an increased number of patients who rayban 3386 were acutely unwell. "The increased attendance and severity of illness of patients during the last week of December were the highest number seen within the last three years, and the Trust's ability to divert was limited due to the local and national pressures," she said. "Our winter plans are designed to help us to be resilient during what is always a time of increased ray ban discount pressure. "The plans are in place to help us maintain, wherever possible, the safe and effective delivery of services, to support patient flow and ensure that patients are not delayed unnecessarily." However, she warned that with activity at times peaking at unprecedented levels, particularly in relation to the volume and acuity of ray ban sunglasses glasses patients admitted, there was an inevitable effect on some aspects of its services. The Press reported on January ray ban latest model 6 how up to 15 ambulances at a time had been left queuing at York Hospital as A struggles to cope with a surge in patient numbers. The Trust said then that over Christmas and New Year, it had seen an increase of 23 per cent in footfall to A with a rise of almost 30 per cent in self referrals, and there was also a 14 per cent rise in ambulance arrivals compared with the previous year. The NHS ship is sinking now. Just bunging up leaks with money is futile. The whole ship needs updating to allow recovering elderly patients to be relocated into community care, therefore releasing A beds, relieving hospital staff, and giving us a breathing space to reorganise the lifeboats. A Visa debit card is still the best way to get prompt attention in the UK NHS. This last paragraph of the report is a clue to some of the problems as well as people not registered with GP or unable to/can't wait for an appointment with a GP for some of the reasons quoted below. It amazes me how more and more houses and student accommodations are being build in York and therefore increasing the size of the population and yet the hospital stays the same size and is expected to deal with patients within the same timescales as previously.

The increase in the number of attendances reflects this and it only takes a simple equation to explain why there is more and more pressure put upon the staff in York ED and why there are longer waits to be seen and for beds.
